Oil and Gas Projects

More and more, international companies face unique and difficult challenges in completing large-scale projects abroad. Many ventures are located in environmentally sensitive areas or political hotspots, and project teams need new skills in understanding their operating environment and developing proactive strategies. Even with the best of intentions, foreign companies may find it difficult to understand the potential conflicts that their actions may stir up.

One example: oil and gas development often takes place on lands occupied or claimed by groups that feel that they are not receiving their fair share of benefits. Many of these groups have become sophisticated in organizing international campaigns against specific companies or projects. And lenders have become reluctant to support projects where such issues haven’t been effectively addressed.

Understanding the perspectives of potential opponents and supporters, developing positive relationships and meeting strict new lending guidelines have become key elements of project implementation.
